Shaping Renault's global design system from India
Corporate handed us a design system that didn't fit the Indian market. So we built the components India actually needed, then pushed them back upstream into the global system, for every hub to use.
← Back to all work
A note on confidentiality: this is an internal design system under NDA, so the component work itself isn't shown. The write-up focuses on the approach and contribution, with the public teaser (further down) as the one thing I can share.
The problem
Renault's design system was built and owned by the corporate UI/UX team, who handed it to the hubs to implement across projects. We were glad to have a shared foundation, but once we started applying it to real work in India, the cracks showed. The component library was limited, hard to customize for our project needs, and missing pieces we relied on. Some components didn't cover the states we needed; others simply weren't there at all.
The process
Rather than work around the gaps quietly, we did two things in parallel. First, we ran a structured audit of the design system and gave the corporate team clear, specific feedback on what was missing and where it fell short for our context. Second, we kept moving on the actual projects, building the components we needed ourselves, customized for India, so delivery never stalled while the system caught up.
The solution
As we built, we didn't just solve for our own projects. We designed the missing components and states properly, packaged them, and pitched them back to corporate to fold into the main system, so every hub gets them, not just us.
The outcome
The audit gave corporate a real picture of where the system needed to grow, and the components we built filled genuine gaps, both missing components and half-finished states. Pitching them upstream turned the system from something we worked around into something that works for the whole org.
Beyond the components: the teaser video
I also made the teaser video for the design system, end to end. I worked with the design system lead in France to shape what it needed to say, then took it from there solo: concept, creation, execution. It went out for marketing, landed on Renault's official LinkedIn, and got a great response from the whole design system community.
